FBI Warns: Your IP Address Could Be a Hacker's Next Target

Your IP address is a very important piece of information for online communication. This data allows you to connect online as networks identify your device, location, and more. Without it, you cannot connect to the internet.

But an IP address has become more than just a simple piece of information – it has become a weapon for online attacks. You could even be part of that attack without knowing it, especially with the current security climate.

Now that threats have been imminent, “the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has published this Public Service Announcement (PSA) to raise awareness of residential proxies, the risks they pose, and steps the public can take to safeguard their devices from becoming part of a residential proxy network”, according to MSN.

Dangers of Proxy IP Address Attacks

A home IP address is valuable to hackers because it is seen as a legitimate connection by security tools. However, if the hacker controls the IP address as a proxy, it may exploit the connectivity and initiate Command and Control of its target. Security systems can detect hackers’ IP addresses, but hiding behind IPs makes them harder to identify.

Proxy IP addresses are also used for DDOS attacks. The goal of the attack is to shut down a website or online service by flooding it with too many requests. Both simple websites and critical government services can be taken down by a large Distributed Denial-of-Service attack. These could also force the website or online service to show its vulnerabilities, opening the possibility of a remote takeover.

Attacks are also evolving. According to Cyber Security News, Hackers use botnets with proxy IPs to control many devices and attack multiple targets. These botnets try to bypass security by finding and exploiting weaknesses.

How You Become a Proxy IP Address Victim and How to Prevent It

Any device connected to the internet could be a proxy IP address. A computer, mobile phone, or even a smart TV could be a proxy IP address for malware attacks. As long as the device uses the internet for transactions and communication, it can be exploited.

These hackers could take over your IP address through malicious files, websites, unsecured apps or software, or an unknown VPN. Be very careful when using unknown online services because, aside from your actual transaction, they may already be installing malware without any notification. Malware was also found in suspicious devices such as Android TV boxes that come with free, often illegal streaming services and VOD (Video on Demand). These devices are too good to be true because hackers will use your IP address in exchange.

In this current climate, it is very important to be extra aware of the potential dangers of the internet. Bad agents are always looking for their next victim, and it could be you. Make sure to visit trusted websites only and use applications from official sources. Updating your devices’ security software and router’s firmware is also a must to ensure its security measures are up to date.
