Zen Internet to Reassign IP Addresses for Select UK Subscribers Amid IPv4 Shortage

A select number of Zen Internet customers received an email informing them of an upcoming change to their IP Address. According to ISP Review, the switch is expected to affect no more than 2% of their total customer base. A relatively small percentage since the company has more than 200,000 subscribers as of 2024, but those affected will face some technical challenges.

Zen Internet is an Internet Service Provider based in the UK with a unique niche that has attracted customers for decades. They are one of the few companies in the UK offering a Static IP Address. Many of their clients take full advantage of this feature by (cite reasons). The company also has casual clients who will be affected by the change, but will only require a router reboot to implement the switch and continue the service. Others who use the static IP address for more than just internet connectivity will have to make some drastic changes.

Zen Internet customers will be affected depending on the services they avail. Customers who paid for additional IP addresses will receive what they have paid for. On the other hand, those who paid for one IP address but received additional allocation will have to pay more if they want to add IP addresses. This is another challenge because they will switch their current IP address and pay more for additional allocation.

This is not the first time Zen Internet has made this type of change. The Register reported last January 2024 on Zen Internet’s announcement of an IP address switch, including fewer IP address allocations, especially for those who paid for a single IP address. Unfortunately, the switch has caused problems for select customers. Some cannot implement the switch in just 30 days, while others were not provided with the range of their new IP address block.

Reason for Switch

The switch may inconvenience select customers, but it is ultimately a business decision for Zen Internet. IPv4 addresses are hard to come by, and they can be used as an additional asset to increase cash flow. Zen Internet leases IPv4 addresses, allowing them to earn without losing ownership.

Affected customers should contact Zen Internet as soon as possible to determine the technical challenge they will face when the switch starts. The IP address switch started on May 1, 2026, and is expected to end on August 30, 2026.
