Netflix Proxy Error? Here's How to Fix VPN Issues and Start Streaming Again
One advantage of using a VPN is access to geo-restricted online services. Netflix is one example, as a VPN can help users access shows not available in their country. With the right VPN, users may bypass Netflix's location-based restrictions and access content available in other countries.
However, Netflix may sometimes block VPN connections and display error code E106 or a message stating that a VPN or proxy has been detected. Users may be asked to turn off the VPN or proxy.
Fortunately, there are many ways to fix the dreaded Error E106. These options address the main reasons for VPN detection alongside recommended fixes.
Checking Your VPN
Netflix and other services with geolocked content maintain a pool of IP addresses associated with VPNs. When these IP addresses are blocked, users can try switching to a different VPN server.
Before changing servers, check if the browser detects your actual location or the VPN server location. If the browser detects your actual physical location, VPN settings aren’t working properly. Changing servers should help activate the VPN under a different IP address.
If changing the server does not work, try changing the VPN protocol in the VPN app. Common options include WireGuard, OpenVPN, and Stealth Mode. Stealth Mode can make VPN traffic look more like regular web traffic.
Browser, App and IPv6 Problems
Your browser or the streaming app itself could also cause Netflix proxy errors. This often happens when you open Netflix without a VPN. Browsers store cached data, which includes user location details. Netflix may display an error when it detects a mismatch between the cached data and your current connection.
Clear your browser’s cache before using Netflix with a VPN. For mobile apps, force stop the app, then go to your device settings and clear its cache.
Aside from cache issues, a VPN may also have problems with an IPv6 connection. To check, open your router settings and see if IPv6 is enabled. Disabling IPv6 is recommended so that both the router and VPN operate solely over IPv4.
Using Smart DNS Features and Dedicated IP Address
If these fixes don’t work, try your VPN provider’s Smart DNS feature. This is useful if you only want to access geo-restricted services and do not need VPN encryption or added privacy. Smart DNS lets you choose a target region, but it does not encrypt your connection.
Purchasing a dedicated IP address is another option to ensure your VPN works with Netflix. A dedicated IP address is used only by you, making it less likely that Netflix will identify it as a VPN address.
Important Notes to Remember When Using a VPN on Netflix
● Netflix may not work with a VPN on ad-supported plans because its advertising content delivery networks (CDNs) do not support VPN connections, making it easier for Netflix to detect and block them.
● Live Events: Premium users using a VPN may not be able to access live events because of regional licensing restrictions.
Using Netflix with a VPN is a great way to enjoy extra content. However, remember that Netflix actively blocks VPN connections due to licensing agreements. Knowing these solutions can help you troubleshoot VPN blocks and get the most out of your Netflix subscription.
