An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a very important component for any device in order to connect to the local network and the internet. Whether wired or wireless, an IP address is needed in order for the network to properly identify the device and connect it to the services the device requires.

This is the reason why an error message “failed to obtain IP address” on any device will mean that the device cannot be connected to the network as well as the internet. For an average user, this could be a big challenge but with the right troubleshooting methods, this problem could be fixed fast.

Basic Diagnosis of Connectivity

Diagnosing the problem is actually pretty straightforward - is the problem only on limited devices or network wide?

If only one or two devices have “failed to obtain IP address” prompt while most can easily connect online, the problem is most likely on the devices. There could be multiple causes to these problems depending on the device used to connect to the network.

On the other hand, if everyone has trouble connecting to the network and the prompt is on almost every device connected then the problem is with the network. No troubleshooting is needed to the devices but the network has to go through basic diagnostics.

Device-Based Connectivity Problem

If your mobile phone or computer cannot connect to the network with this problem while others can, then the problem could be software or hardware based. Software problems such as newly installed apps or basic network configuration change can prevent devices from network connectivity. Remember the latest changes or installed apps in your device and try to revert it to its previous configuration.

Inability to obtain an IP address could also be a hardware problem such as outdated network cards especially on PCs. A firmware update should provide a good fix. It’s also possible to remove the network card and reinsert it to establish a brand new connection and configuration with the computer and network.

But before doing any of these tasks, make sure to restart your device or computer and try it again. It is possible that an IP address conflict exists between two devices and a restart could refresh the request.

Network-Based Problem

On the other hand, if everyone trying to access the network experiences the same problem, then it’s definitely a network problem. The router has trouble identifying the devices trying to connect and could not provide an IP address to differentiate them.

For home networks, the first thing to do is to actually just restart the network. Here’s a tip: unplug the router and count to ten before plugging it again. This will allow the router to fully restart its configuration including its connectivity with the ISP or Internet Service Provider. After restarting, the router will then try to connect each device within its network and assign each with a different IP address.

But if the problem still persists, it’s now time to open the routers’ network admin configuration to check the network settings and firmware. It is possible that a router just needs to update its firmware so everyone can connect easily. It’s also important to check the network settings to ensure its proper configuration. If you have a dynamic IP address set-up make sure the network configuration is automatic. For static IP address set-up make sure you provide the correct IP addresses manually. Check your router manual to learn more about your network configuration and troubleshooting.

If your device displays a “failed to obtain IP address” prompt when trying to connect to the network, make sure to follow the basic troubleshooting steps. Identify if it's a device or router problem to easily implement a fix and connect to the network as soon as possible.
