IPAM (IP Address Management) is a collection of tools for efficiently monitoring, managing, and controlling IP addresses within the network. Developed by and for network administrators, it is a recommended tool for enterprises and organizations of any size. Its role in maintaining network connectivity while protecting it from unexpected disruptions and attacks is essential.

Connectbase, a US-based company that offers a platform for buying and selling network services worldwide, recently announced its own IPAM. Developed as part of their CIM (Circuit Inventory Manager), Connectbase IPAM addresses the concern of network administrators regarding the tedious work in handling IP addresses of any size, according to the company’s press release to Capacity Global:

“Traditionally, IP address management has been handled through manual spreadsheets or siloed systems, resulting in inconsistent visibility, operational risk, and increased overhead. Connectbase’s new IPAM module tackles these pain points head-on, offering network teams a centralized and contextualized platform to efficiently plan, track, and govern their entire IP space.”

Connectbase’s decision to launch its own IPAM is a smart business decision. As a platform for buying and selling network services, the company should continue to improve its services to ensure customer loyalty. Integration of IPAM reduces its customers’ need to look for additional tools outside Connectbase to manage their network properly.

The CIM Advantage

The introduction of IPAM as part of Connectbase’s suite of services to customers is a welcome addition. This is also an important update since IPAM will be part of the company’s CIM application. According to Connectbase, CIM is a “centralized platform for tracking and managing network infrastructure...”

CIM does well on its own as a network manager because of its ability to track network equipment, even on cable management. However, without an IPAM, tracking this sensitive network equipment will require an additional tool.

Adding IPAM means Connectbase customers can now monitor their hardware and effectively manage their IP addresses without additional tools. By centralizing management in one efficient tool, network managers will have full control. It should be noted that these tools are all web-based. This feature gives network managers efficient network control anywhere.

The Challenge of IPAM Implementation

While IPAM integration is great news for centralized network control, it also has its challenges. Among them is the required setup to effectively integrate monitoring and control into IPAM. Infrastructure integration is always a big challenge, especially for large enterprises handling hundreds, if not thousands, of active connections. Connectbase customers even face a larger integration challenge due to its scale.

Careful planning is recommended before using IPAM for efficient network management. Every device that connects to the network must be mapped, all network activity must be monitored, and all hardware must be logged in the inventory to ensure the correct and efficient use of tools. Everything must be tracked because inaccuracies in network connections and load can lead to poor decisions, even during troubleshooting.

Connectbase’s integration of IPAM with CIM can provide the necessary support for enterprises, with proper planning and integration. It’s an ideal suite of tools for enterprises, especially in network services.
